Birthday Month Recap

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Pretty unreal that it’s already May! So, I wanted to try something a little different and give you a birthday month recap. It was a pretty eventful month. I went to a few places and I sewed a few things, so lets talk about it.

I kicked off the month by going to Mood Fabrics Miami to scope out the place for South Florida Frocktails. Dayana and I went to check it out to figure out how we would set everything up for the night of the event. Incase you haven’t been following along, my friend Dayana and I are going to be hosting South Flordia Frocktails at Mood in Miami. We are SEW excited and can’t wait to see everyone who’s coming. If you haven’t grabbed your ticket, make sure you do so HERE.

While at Mood, I decided to have a mini photo shoot in the store. In March, I participated in a sew-along with Black Sewing Network over on TikTok. It was so much fun. I plan on doing more once Frocktails is over. We made Mimi G x Simplicity 9701. This pattern is so amazing because it’s super easy to make. There are only a few pieces to this pattern and comes together quickly. So much so that I made 2. I made the long version with long sleeves and the short version with short sleeves. I also made matching headbands for each.

On April 3, Fabric Mart published my Sitting Pretty In Pink in My Party Dress blog post For my guest post of the month I made Vogue 1884 using this Fandango Pink Cotton/Lycra Stretch Sateen which I fell in love with as soon as I saw it. You can check out the blog post HERE.

During the month of April was also Fort Lauderdale Fashion Week, which I’ve always wantend to attend. This year I got to attend 2 events! The first was the Influencer Blogger Brunch which was held on a beautiful yatch. It was nice to meet up with some of my friends.

I wore my Saguaro Set from Friday Pattern Company that I made last year that was featured on the Fabric Mart blog. You can read all about it HERE. I totally love the fit of this set and I already started making another one.

That same week, I went to the Fashion Instistitute of South Florida’s graduation fashion show. It was also part of Fort Lauderdale Fashion Week. My friend Dayana and I went to support another sewing friend, Gianna who was graduating that night. Her colleciton was amazing. I couldn’t be any more proud.

My birthday was April 10th, which was a Monday, but we celebrated on Saturday. Thank goodness too because on Monday it started raining and didn’t stop until Thursday. It was the great Fort Lauderdale flood. Seriously, it rained so much that the airport was closed for two days. Any who, we went to Lona Cocina & Tequileria on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. The food was amazing, and the view of the beach was even better. It was a beautiful afternoon. I wore my Seashell Summer Dress from Daria Patternmaking that I made last summer.

My niece came to visit on her spring break and decided to spring on me that she wanted me to make her prom dress. I decided to take her to one of my favorite places, Jetway Runway Cafe, for lunch. The food is always amazing! After lunch we headed to my local fabric store to pick out the fabric for her dress. Stand by for more on her prom dress.

In anticipation of finally being able to go to the beach, I made another Marley One Piece swimsuit from Edgewater Avenue. This is my second one because I gave my last one to my sister in Puerto Rico. You can check out my last one HERE. I love Edgewater Avenue swimsuits and this one doesn’t disappoint. I love the fact that it has the feel of a two piece but really it’s a one piece. I’m also made the Bruno bucket hat from Fibre Mood which I’ve made several times and the tote is McCall’s M8271.

I closed out the month with a bang, I think. I received a commission from a referral, and she wanted a dress for a black tie wedding she was attending. She sent me her inspiration picture and said that she wanted something similar but less sexy. I decided to make the bodice using the Rose Cafe Bustier Dress pattern with some modifications. I self-drafted the skirt using a YouTube view I found, also with some modifications. You can find the tutorial HERE. This YouTuber has so many tutorials you should really check out. I’ll be writing another blog post with all the details on how I made the dress. My client was in love with her dress, and she looked amazing in it. Don’t you think?

Let me know if you enjoy this type of post. It was fun looking back at all the things I did last month. To be totally honest, I was pretty active last month and was really outside. lol Things don’t always go that way so I’m not sure I can keep this up every month. We’ll see.

Umtil next time,

Johanna
