Sewing Plans for 2023 – #2023MakeNine

I’m excited to share my Sewing Plans for 2023 – #2023MakeNine. I know what you might be thinking, it’s March. I know. Who says you can only make sewing plans at the beginning of the year? For those of you who are new around here, Make Nine is a challenge held on Instagram where sewist select nine things to make for that year. It’s kind of like having sewing goals or plans for the year. If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know I skipped out on the last few years. Well, I’m bringing it back and I’m determined to complete it this year, so here goes.

#2023MakeNine List

  1. Make Jeans – Let’s kick this list off with jeans. I’ve had making jeans on all of my previous lists, and I’m bring it back because it’s definitely going down this year. I signed up for #Jeanuary with Nikki from www.sewingmystyle.com and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. Sometimes I need a little hand holding and Nikki did just that. I signed up for her jeans making course and I upgraded to getting a personal fitting session, which I thoroughly enjoyed. During our zoom session, Nikki had me take all the necessary body measurements needed to make a pair of jeans. We decided that I should make the Ginger Jeans from Closet Core Patterns. You can find that pattern HERE, if you’re interested. As of this post I’ve put my pattern together and cut it out, I’ve pretreated my fabric and cut out all the pattern pieces.

2. Rose Cafe Bustier Dress – A few summers ago this pattern had the IG sewing community in a choke hold, including me. I purchased the Rose Cafe Bustier Dress pattern from Daria Patternmaking and have been itching to make it since I hit download. This patter is super sweet and features a bustier bodice that you can make as a dress or a top. The pattern comes with 11 cup sizes for each dress size. If you do not fall in that size range an option would be Know Me pattern ME2015 made by Aaronica Cole. You can find Daria’s pattern HERE and M2015 HERE.

3. Jean Jacket – Back on the list this year is making a jean jacket. I used to have a jean jacket from the GAP that I would wear ALL the time. So much so that I wore the elbows out. Well, I’ve added a jean jacket back on the list because I’ve never managed to replace that jacket and I really miss it. I plan on using Simplicity 8845 found HERE.

4. BagsBags – I have a guilty pleasure and that’s purchasing every bag making kit that Nikki Made comes out with. I’ve made several of her bags during virtual workshops that she’s held, 3 to be exact. Well, I also purchased several kits that I need to make on my own. I really need to get to get to it because they are so cute. I would like to complete the Tess Marble Cross bag which I get to customize with a marble acrylic application. The next is the Thegaia Crossbody that has a  hair-on outer flap and lastly the Mahli Laced Tote which features woven leather pattern. Looks like I need to get busy ASAP. To be honest with you all, I’d be happy with completing just one. lol Make sure you head on over to @NikkiMade so know when she drops more bag making kits. You’ll be hooked too.

5. Shoes – A few years ago I got bitten by the shoemaking bug and it’s only recently gotten worse. Nikki Made also came out with a few shoemaking kits and I jumped on those too. I told you I give Treasure from Nikki Made ALL my money. I got the Hair-On Espadrilles and the Leather Espadrille Sandals. Now, when I got these, they were being sold as shoe making kits. They kits are no longer available, but you can purchase the patterns oin her site. Each image has a link to each pattern. Recently, Mimi G added an Intro to Shoemaking class to Sew It Academy! I am super excited to get started on these babies.

6. DIY Dress Form Cover – A while ago I set out on a mission to find a dress form. I did find one on Facebook Market Place, but I got a little excited and wasn’t thinking. The dress form wasn’t my size. I was going to just pad it out until I found the DIY Dress Form Cover from Bootstrap Fashion. You can enter all your measurements on the site, and they will send you the pattern to your measurements. I’m very excited to get to this project because I want to do more pattern drafting.

7. Complete Pattern Making 101 – About 2 years ago, I signed up for Pattern Making 101 from Creative Costume Academy taught by Tricia Camacho. I really liked Tricia’s approach to pattern making/drafting and I signed up for her course. Well, I got about 1/2 way through and then life happened, and I didn’t finish the course. Well, I’m going back to the beginning and will be starting the course over and plan on completing it this time! Tricia offers several different courses and offers different services so if you’re interested in learning pattern making, check her out.

8. Self-Drafted Garment – As part of my pattern making journey, I would like to make a self-drafted garment. Like from start to finish self-drafted. I think that once I get through Pattern Making 101 and get the basics, I can embark on this journey. I already have something in mind and if successful, I’d like to share it with all of you! This is a personal goal of mine that I’m putting out into the universe. You heard it here first! I found a fun page that contains tons of croquis if you’re interested. It’s called sewingnpatterns.com.

9. Sew It Academy Courses – Finally, I have Sew It Academy on my list. I mentioned them above for their shoe making course. Mimi G created Sew It Academy in 2016 and I’ve been a student ever since. I’m ashamed to say that I’ve only completed a handful or courses from the academy. I’ve watched every single class that has come out, but I really need to get better about making the actual projects from the classes. Having said that, I want to commit to sewing up 1 project per quarter. So, am I technically behind already? If you’re looking to learn how to sew or just improve your skills, then I highly recommend signing up to Sew It Academy.

So there you have it. These are some of my sewing plans for 2023 and I’m excited to get started! Let me know if you have a Make Nine list that you are working through.

Until next time!

Johanna
